This is a combination of two trips to the complex we made. The first group of photos are taken at dawn as the sun rises behing the main temple (Angkor Wat.) You don't get a good sense of perspective from the picture, but I'd guess we were half a mile away from the five towers. They are very big. There are pictures taken from the tower that show the walkway to the outer wall. There is another walkway that long over a moat. I took those shots from the far side of the moat. The second trip was in the afternoon when we went to Angkor Thom and Bayon was walked around a bit afterwards.
The complex was started in 1100 or so and was built up for several hundred years until the Khmer empire fell. The biggest temple (Angkor Wat) was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, though I believe the whole complex was rededicated to Buddhism at some point.
We saw only the smallest part of the complex. You could spend a week there and still not see all the temples.
